July 22nd, 2009 - 1:28 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Raipur, July 22 (IANS) Traffic was blocked on the Kolkata-Mumbai National Highway-6 in Chhattisgarh early Wednesday and thousands of people of low-lying areas were hit as heavy rains continued to lash the state.
All the 18 districts of the state have been receiving heavy rain since Tuesday with low-lying areas and roads being inundated. About 30,000 people of state capital Raipur were hit as their houses were submerged.
The situation is likely to worsen with the meteorological department predicting more rains across Chhattisgarh.
“The state is expected to receive heavy rainfall for two more days with a low pressure area formed over the state’s northern region,” Director of the meteorological department M.L. Sahu told reporters.
Traffic at several places in Mahasamund district on the Kolkata-Mumbai national highway was blocked as roads were flooded, three small bridges had collapsed and some trucks were stuck in roadside ditches.
Several areas of the state’s southern Bastar region were cut off due to water-logging of roads and local authorities were working to provide succour to residents.
Relief department officials said the state’s major rivers including Shivnath in Durg district were flowing above the danger mark.
