Heavy snow blocks Kashmir highway (Lead)
February 6th, 2010 - 3:40 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Feb 6 (IANS) Heavy snowfall Saturday blocked the Srinagar-Jammu highway, stranding vehicles and travellers, an official said.
The highway has been closed following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions, an officer from the traffic department said here. It has been snowing across the Kashmir Valley since Saturday morning.
Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg have also received heavy snowfall.
The weather office has forecast heavy snow in the higher reaches of the state and moderate to heavy snowfall in the plains of the Kashmir Valley for the next six days.
Sonam Lotus, director of the weather office, advised people living in the higher, avalanche prone areas to move about with caution because of possible avalanches.
