Heavy rains in Delhi, more showers likely (Lead)
September 19th, 2010 - 2:52 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS) Heavy rains drenched Delhi Sunday morning, leading to waterlogging in several areas in the national capital. The weatherman forecast a cloudy sky and more showers during the day.
“The skies will remain cloudy and pockets of the city will receive rains or thundershowers…A few spells may be heavy in some areas,” said an official of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The waterlogging caused by the incessant rains resulted in small cars getting stuck in pools of water in some localities.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police (DTP), water had accumulated in many roads including Mathura road, Ashram intersection and Moolchand in south Delhi, Mother Teresa Crescent in central Delhi, Kashmere Gate and the Mori Gate roundabout in north Delhi.
Being a Sunday, there wasn’t much traffic on the roads.
“No traffic jams were reported from anywhere in the city,” a Delhi Traffic Police official said.
The capital received 4 mm of rainfall between Saturday morning and 8.30 a.m. Sunday.
Delhi has recorded a total rainfall of 893 mm this season, around 47 percent above the average.
The minimum temperature dropped by a notch to 23.1 degrees Celsius while the maximum is expected to hover around 31 degrees.
The maximum humidity was recorded at 96 percent while the minimum was 66 percent, the official said.
