Chandigarh, Sep 19 (IANS) Moderate to heavy rains lashed Chandigarh and its surrounding areas Friday, paralyzing normal life and prompting the Punjab government to direct senior officers to keep a close watch on the situation. “It rained 60 mm in the city Friday. The rains started early in the morning and continued without a break throughout the day,” said a senior meteorological department official.
“In Punjab, cities like Amritsar, Bathinda and Jalandhar did not have any or much rainfall while the towns near Haryana including Patiala experienced a heavy rainfall Friday,” Chatar Singh Malik, director of the met department here, told IANS.
Met officials have forecast similar conditions to prevail in the region for the 24-30 hours from friday evening.
Following incessant rains in several parts of Punjab, the state government directed all Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to remain available at their respective headquarters to take control of any flood-like situation.
A Punjab government spokesman said the chief secretary had issued directions to the concerned officers to keep a close watch on the situation due to widespread rains in the state.
Officials of the drainage wing of the irrigation department had also been asked to keep strict vigil on the situation and gear up their machinery to face any unforeseen eventuality arising out of the prevailing situation, the spokesman added.
