Heat wave kills three more in Orissa, toll now 14
April 23rd, 2010 - 9:27 pm ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, April 23 (IANS) Three more people died of sunstroke in Orissa, taking the toll to 14 in the state, an official said Friday.
“We have confirmed three more deaths due to sunstroke. The deaths occurred in the districts of Jagatsinghpur, Balasore and Bolangir on March 30, April 13 and April 18, but were confirmed by the local administration today (Friday),” an official of the state revenue control room told IANS.
Local media reports and non-official sources, however, put the toll since March at 70.
The state is reeling under severe heat wave with several areas witnessing a maximum temperature of 40 to 46 degrees Celsius.
The district headquarters of Sambalpur, 317 km from here, Friday recorded 46 degrees Celsius, the day’s highest in the state.
Several other places which recorded high temperature, included Talcher and Titilagarh 45.5 degrees each, Hirakud 45.1, Jharsuguda 44.9 and Bolangir 44.8 degrees.
Temperature in state capital Bhubaneswar and nearby Cuttack city was recorded at 38.5 and 37.3 degrees respectively.
The heat weave conditions will continue to prevail over some parts of the state Saturday, the official said.
