Bhubaneswar, May 4 (IANS) The death toll in an unprecedented heat wave in Orissa has risen to 22, officials here said Monday.
The Met Department said that high temperatures were recorded in most parts of the state except the coastal belt that was a little cooler due to sporadic rain.
In many towns, above-average temperatures were recorded. The towns included Jharsuguda (41.1 degrees Celsius), Sambalpur (42.8), Hirakud (41.0), Titlagarh (43.5), Bolangir (43.1), and Bhabanipatna (40.5) in western Orissa.
“We have confirmed only one death due to sunstroke today (Monday). The total deaths due to sunstroke now stand at 22,” an official of the state revenue control room told IANS.
