April 22nd, 2011 - 8:04 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, April 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Global environmental watch dog Greenpeace has slammed top US tech companies for not being responsible enough concerning how they generate their electricity.
The criticism were contained in a 35-page document which was released by the organization. The document which was titled “How Dirty Is Your Data?” looked at the tech companies’ carbon foot prints.
The IT policy analyst of Greenpeace, Gary Cook, told reporters that, “We expect these companies to play a pivotal role in ensuring we move to clean, safe renewable energy system and void future disasters like Fukushima.”
Greenpeace used three factors- Transparency, Infrastructure siting and Mitigation- to rank the companies.
Apple, Facebook, Twitter, Google and Yahoo were among the organizations that were criticized. None of the companies listed above scored ‘A’ in any of the factors. Twitter came off worst of the companies. Twitter scored ‘F’ in all the factors.
Greenpeace looked at where a particular company decides to locate its servers, how ready the company wants to share information regarding its carbon footprints and the readiness of a particular company to reduce or remove its dependence on fossil-based energy sources.
