Kolkata, March 25 (IANS) A two-and-a-half-year-old dog of a West Bengal couple has given birth to 16 puppies and a doctor Wednesday said it was one of the rarest cases in veterinary history.
Soumen and Soma Santra’s Jenny, a Golden Retriever, gave birth to nine male and seven female puppies Friday.

“They are all caesarean pups. It is one of the rarest cases in veterinary history that a female dog gave birth to so many pups at a stretch… in fact, as far as my research goes, Jenny is the first dog to give birth to the largest litter in India in the last 40 years,” Nikhil Krishna Basu, who handled Jenny’s delivery, told IANS.

Jenny as well as her pups are doing fine, said the doctor.

Basu said as per the Guinness Book of World Records, a Neapolitan Bull Mastiff Tia gave birth to 25 pups in the US in 2005.

“After Tia, there’s only Retro, a Golden Retriever, who gave birth to 16 puppies (same as Jenny’s count) in the US in 2008,” Basu said

“I still can’t believe that I helped a dog deliver 16 pups… examining her while she was pregnant, I expected her to deliver more than eight pups… but never thought the count will end up creating a record.”

Jenny was put on a liquid diet of milk, soup and health drinks till Monday. She was more than happy to be back on her regular diet of rice and chicken Tuesday.

“We feel so proud for Jenny… she is our daughter… and we are not thinking of selling her pups at the moment,” said Soma.
