Fog disrupts train services in Delhi (Lead)
December 21st, 2011 - 1:15 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 21 (IANS) A foggy Wednesday morning gave way to a clear day in Delhi, but not before delaying 50 trains.
The weather condition in Delhi is better, but not in other northern parts of the country. There is a heavy backlog leading to many delays and rescheduling of trains, a Northern Railways spokesperson said.
“Around 50 trains are running behind schedule by eight hours due to heavy fog all over northern India,” the railway official said.
The official added that as a precautionary measure, 28 trains have been cancelled till Jan 31 due to dense fog that prevails in the region during this period.
However, flight operations were largely unaffected at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport which witnessed slight fog Wednesday morning.
“Almost all of the flights departed on schedule,” an airport official said.
Visibility fell to 350 metres at 8.30 a.m. while the minimum temperature was recorded a notch below average at 6.8 degrees Celsius.
But the Met office has forecast a clear and sunny day. “The maximum is expected to hover around 22 degrees Celsius,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
On Tuesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 20.4 and 4.8 degrees respectively.
According to IMD, the coldest day of the season so far has been Dec 16 when minimum temperature dropped to 4.7 degree and maximum to 21.7 degrees.
