Fog disrupts flights, trains in chilly Delhi (Lead)
December 20th, 2011 - 3:11 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 20 (IANS) Despite a slight respite from three days of heavy fog, around 70 trains got delayed due to poor visibility in Delhi which experienced a chilly Tuesday morning. Several flights were delayed or cancelled but airport officials refused to blame the fog for it.
A light blanket of fog enveloped the city Tuesday and the visibility at 8.30 a.m. was 600 metres - better compared to Monday. Chilly winds continued to make Delhiites shiver as the minimum temperature settled three notches below average at 4.8 degrees Celsius.
According to the Delhi International Airport Limited’s (DIAL) website at 11 a.m., six domestic flights arriving in Delhi were delayed and five were cancelled. One international flight each was cancelled and delayed.
Two domestic flights departing from Delhi were delayed and three were cancelled while five international flights were delayed and one was cancelled.
However, DIAL officials denied fog was affecting air traffic.
“We have no reports of cancellations or delays. There may be other reasons behind these flights getting affected,” an official said.
According to a railway official, around 70 trains were delayed due to fog and 40 trains have been cancelled.
“Around 70 trains are running behind schedule by several hours due to heavy fog all over northern India,” a Northern Railway spokesperson said.
The official added that as a precautionary measure, 40 trains have been cancelled in the first week of December till Jan 31 due to dense fog that prevails in the region during this period.
A clear day is in store for the city but chilly winds will blow throughout the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 21 degrees Celsius.
Reports from Kolkata said many trains from northern and western India, including the New Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani Express, were being inordinately delayed by 8-12 hours due to the fog.
