Flood gates opened at Himachal’s Pong Dam
August 18th, 2011 - 6:38 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Aug 18 (IANS) The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Thursday opened the floodgates of the Pong Dam in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh as the water in the reservoir almost reached its optimum level.
A Punjab irrigation department spokesman here said the water level at Pong Dam, which is on river Beas, has touched 1388.05 feet - its total capacity is 1,390 feet.
“To avoid any emergency, the BBMB has opened the flood gates of Pong Dam,” he said.
He said the water in the Pong Dam reservoir was increasing due to continuous heavy rainfall in the catchment area of the Beas river.
The water level in the Gobindsagar reservoir of Bhakra Dam had reached over 1,664 feet. The capacity of the 225-metre dam is 1,680 feet.
“The inflow was 57,000 cusecs,” BBMB chief engineer V.N. Goel told IANS.
“We are discharging 64,000 cusecs, both through normal operation of turbines and the spillways,” he added.
The Punjab government had Tuesday cautioned district authorities and people against the possibility of floods in some districts downstream of the Beas and Sutlej rivers after the BBMB released excess water from the Pong Dam earlier this week.
