February 25th, 2011 - 7:32 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, Feb 25 (IANS) At least five people were injured when villagers opposed to a thermal power project clashed Friday with police in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district.Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the villagers who attacked them with stones and sticks. The incident took place in Vadditandra village bordering Orissa.
The trouble began when the villagers tried to stop the work on the thermal project being developed by East Coast Energy in neighbouring Kakarapalli village.
Police arrested 10 people when they tried to stop the work, which had resumed after over six months, saying it would damage the ecology and hit their livelihood.
The arrests led to attacks on police.
East Coast Energy is developing a 2,640 MW coal-based thermal power plant at a cost of Rs.12,000 crore. The company claims the project poses no threat to environment.
