Volcano Eruption Reykjavik, Apr 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Eyjafjallajokull volcano has gotten a new lease of life and it was seen to spew smoke, ice and steam in the air. It had erupted in March also, and then the eruptions were basically on a 2 km wide strip that was completely devoid of ice, just at the flank of the volcano. After that there were signs that the volcano was settling down and the eruptions would stop, but suddenly it roared back to life.

The latest eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano occurred at around 6 miles west of the glacier, which was basically at a higher altitude above the glacier line. A geophysicist at the University of Iceland – Pall Einarsson said that the magma was responsible for melting a huge gaping hole in the 200 meters thick layer of ice, which was covering the crater of the volcano. And the melting of the ice is in turn, sending a lot of water coursing down the glacier, into the low-lying regions. “Once the original passage on the side of the volcano became blocked the pressure built up inside the volcano and an eruption broke out at the top,” he said.

When he was asked about till when the volcanic activity would persist, then he said that, “It could be hours, months or even years.”
