Kolkata, Jan 7 (IANS) In a bid to raise awareness for an orange revolution, Vivekananda Vijnana Mission and West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation Limited (WBGEDCL) will organise the 15-day Energy Awareness Yatra (East) this month from here to Nagpur.”It will be one of the four rallies originating from four different parts of the country following an initiative taken by the Vijnana Bharati as part of its ‘National Energy Awareness Campaign (NEAC)’ from Jan 12-27.

Orange revolution encourages energy security and energy sufficiency.

“The basic aim is to create awareness on importance of energy for the country’s sustainable growth. The rallyists will urge people to use renewable energy sources to enable the country achieve self-reliance in respect of energy,” said R. Chatterjee, joint secretary of the NEAC (East).

The rally beginning here from Rabindra Sadan area will proceed all way to Nagpur covering a vast stretches across states like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharastra.

The other three rallies beginning from Rajkot in the west, Amritsar in the north and Kanyakumari in the south, will cover all major cities across 20 states and converge at Nagpur, where the first India international Energy Summit will be held from Jan 28-30, he added.

“The rally will showcase the latest technologies in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and provide conservation tips. In West Bengal we will conduct public meetings at Uluberai, Kharagpur, Bankura, Durgapur, Assansol and Jamuria involving thousands of students and common people,” said WBGEDCL managing director S.P. Gon Chaudhuri.

He said: “Of the 200 crore people living without electricity worldwide, 40 crore are in India. So we need to generate awareness about the usage of solar energy and other renewable energy.”

“Besides, two tableaux will screen two documentary films - ‘Anibarjo’ and ‘Coal to Solar’. Anibarjo is based on cyclone Aila, which ravaged a vast portion of Sunderbans May 25, 2009. It will showcase the relevance of solar energy in developing the area,” Chaudhuri added.
