Elephant found dead in Orissa forest
December 13th, 2009 - 1:06 am ICT by IANSBhubaneswar, Dec 12 (IANS) A seven-year-old female elephant was found dead Saturday in the forest area of Orissa’s Ganjam district, an official said.
Locals Saturday morning spotted the elephant’s body near Kuradiha village, some 300 km from here.
“The elephant may have been electrocuted,” a wildlife official said, adding that the exact cause of the death could be ascertained only after an autopsy.
Dozens of elephants get killed every year either by poachers or by electrocution in Orissa, which is home to 10 percent of the country’s tusker population.
