Earth Quake Hits San Diego

July 12th, 2009 - 8:53 pm ICT by GD Tell a Friend -

san-diego-earthquakeAn earthquake of the magnitude of 4.0 that has struck off the coast of San Diego on Saturday, July 11, morning, shook the adjoining area quite violently. There has been no reports of damages or injuries as of now. A Coronado police dispatcher said that she felt a brief shake but no one has reported any emergencies right away.

According to the reports of the US Geological Survey, the quake is said to have occurred around 7:34 a.m, and had originated about 30 miles west of La Jolla, 22 miles west of the coastal town of Coronado and 37 miles west of San Diego. The origin of the quake is said to have been about 12 miles deep from the surface of the land, as had been estimated by the USGS.

The jolt of the earthquake had been felt across San Diego County, including Oceanside, Escondido, Vista and Carlsbad, as well as in Temecula, Laguna Niguel and Ladera Ranch. The USGS has classified the earthquake as being “light” or moderate in nature.

The impact of the earthquake had confused the squids which are found in the water near by and had sent them hurrying towards the beach, seeking safe refuge. The squids had initially been spotted at the La Jolla Shores beach almost about half an hour later after the earthquake had been reported at 7:30 a.m, according to the San Diego 6.

It seems that not only had the squids turned up in shallow water, they had even moved up on to the beach. Most of them were reported to be as big as 3 feet to 4 feet in dimension. Some of the swimmers and joggers present in the area at that point of time had resorted to rescue the invertebrates and get them back in the water.
