New Delhi, March 25 (IANS) Weather in the northern states Tuesday continued to advance to the inevitable and gruelling summer, usually beginning April. In contrast, cities in southern India continued to be lashed by heavy rains for yet another day. Chennai, which hosts the India-South Africa Test match Wednesday in the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, recorded 4.8 millimetres of rainfall. Another major southern city, Bangalore, also had rains, but it was less than even a millimetre.

However, the Met Office forecast that rain would subside in the southern peninsula in the coming days though scattered thundershowers would continue.

The northern states, including Delhi, continued to have dry weather with the weatherman predicting that the current spell would continue for two-three more days.

In the national capital, the maximum temperature was recorded at 33 degrees Celsius, down by a degree from Monday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 16.9 degrees Celsius, one degree above the normal level.

In Mumbai, the maximum temperature remained one degree below the normal level at 32.3, and Kolkata received some rain.

The weatherman has forecast that states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh would get isolated rain in the next 24 hours.

The following were the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Tuesday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
