New Delhi, July 12 (IANS) With the onset of the monsoon, the Delhi government is determined to control floods in the capital this year, Minister for Revenue, Irrigation and Flood A.K. Walia said Tuesday after visiting flood-prone areas here.

Accompanied by officials of the irrigation and flood control department, Walia visited flood-prone areas including Sonia Vihar Pushta, Wazirabad, Jagatpur, Hiranki, Jhingola and Palla in Delhi and Dahisar Bund (embankment) in Haryana.

“This time, we are taking all the required precautions to escape last year’s situation. We will take all necessary steps to control floods, if they occur,” Walia told IANS.

The minister directed all the departments concerned to keep themselves absolutely ready to meet any flood challenge to Delhi.

“To stop soil erosion, wire crates with stones will be laid on Yamuna bank and the flood and irrigation department has arranged around 1,000 cubic metre of stones and a large number of sand bags,” said Walia

For this purpose, Rs.40 lakh has been sanctioned for this purpose. Besides, the government has also released an amount of Rs.72 lakh for strengthening of Dahisar embankment in Haryana, which is essential to avoid a situation leading to flood.

Walia also said that a central control room has been set up and 63 boats, 15 divers, 100 pumps, and 24 wireless centres have been kept ready.
