Delhi gets advanced radar for weather forecast
May 20th, 2010 - 11:29 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 20 (IANS) Minister of State for Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan Thursday inaugurated India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) advanced doppler radar here for more accurate weather forecasting in Delhi and adjoining areas.
According to IMD director B.P. Yadav, the department is replacing its old and conventional radar with the new S-band doppler weather radar (DWR).
“The DWR will make things easier for the weather department to predict weather of Delhi and its adjoining areas, like thunder storms and heavy rains,” Yadav said.
The DWR would provide short-range accurate weather prediction in a nearly 500 km radius, the official added.
A total of 15 locations across the country have been selected to install this new system. Other sites chosen for its installation are Mumbai, Pune, Patna, Goa, Patiala, Mohanbari, Dibrugarh, Lucknow, Paradip, Karaikal, Kochi, Bhopal, Nagpur and Agartala.
