Cold wave grips Punjab, Haryana
January 12th, 2010 - 12:49 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Jan 12 (IANS) An intense cold wave continued to grip Punjab, Haryana and their joint capital Chandigarh Tuesday as the mercury dipped further. Amritsar recorded a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius. The weatherman forecast rainfall in the region.
Patiala and Ludhiana had lows of 6.2 and 5.8 degrees Celsius respectively.
Chandigarh shivered because the maximum temperature did not rise above 8.6 degrees Celsius Monday, though the minimum was a relatively mild 5.8. This was the lowest maximum temperature recorded here in the last seven years.
“Mercury is dipping because of the cold wave across the region. We forecast further dip in both day and night temperatures in the coming days,” a met official said.
“Overcast conditions are prevailing in most parts of this union territory, Punjab and Haryana. We are expecting isolated spells of rain in the next 48 hours (on Tuesday and Wednesday). We had some respite from fog today (Tuesday) and it was clear in most parts by 7.30 a.m.”
In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal cities recorded minimum temperatures of 4.7, 6 and 6.1 degrees Celsius respectively.
