Cold takes 6 more lives in UP; toll rises to 69
January 8th, 2011 - 8:42 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Jan 8 (IANS) Six more people died in Uttar Pradesh due to extreme cold during the past 24 hours, taking the winter toll to 69, officials here said Saturday.Three people died in Shajahanpur due to the extreme cold, two in Bareilly and one in Basti, an official said.
According to a state disaster management department official, “the freezing conditions continuing since the New Year’s day have been responsible for taking as many as 69 lives in the state.”
The overcast sky, thick fog and mist have led to a steep fall in day temperature, turning it stinging cold.
The official said that most of the cold wave victims were pavement-dwellers.
Brief sunshine Friday afternoon did bring some respite to the people, but it was short-lived as the biting chill returned after sunset.
Sultanpur recorded the lowest temperature at 1.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Agra (2.3 degrees), Lucknow (3.8), Varanasi (4.1), Allahabad (4.3) and Gorakhpur (5.3).
The maximum temperature also touched as low as 7.7 degrees Celsius in Agra, which was experiencing the coldest of winters in recent years.
In most other places, the day temperature ranged between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius, according to the weather office.
