Cleaning Yamuna to miss 2015 target: Jairam
March 27th, 2011 - 10:00 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 27 (IANS) Even as Delhi misses one deadline after another for treating sewage entering the Yamuna, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said Sunday the treatment of all sewage before being released in the river may not even be possible by the 2015 target.
Talking to reporters after a meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Ramesh said: “Solving the Yamuna issue is a long process as even by the end of 2015 we cannot be able to discharge treated affluents in the Yamuna.”
The national capital’s plans to counter climate change had set a 2014-15 deadline for setting up sewage treatment plants with the capacity to ensure that all drainage water going in Yamuna is treated.
“Nearly 47 percent of Delhi doesn’t have any organised sewerage network. Over 26 drains with untreated sewerage directly enters into Yamuna,” Ramesh said, adding that long-term projects were needed to save the river.
Trying to put an end to the ongoing blame game between Delhi and Haryana on who pollutes Yamuna, the minister had a meeting with the two state chiefs to help sort out the issues.
“There will be continuous monitoring of water quality at Palla, where Yamuna enters Delhi from Haryana and the same process will be done at Badarpur,” Ramesh said.
The monitoring stations will be set up and maintained by the Central Pollution Control Board, similar to the one already existing in Wazirabad.
