January 23rd, 2012 - 9:04 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Jan 23 (IANS) China has spent one billion yuan (about $158 million) in 2011 to protect the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve, the source of the country’s three major rivers, the authorities said Monday.
The money was spent on afforestation and recovery of grasslands, said Li Xiaonan, vice director of the reserve. The reserve covers 150,000 sq km and is the source of Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers, the China Daily reported.
The Lancang, also known as the Mekong, originates in China and flows through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
