Chennai, Oct 19 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government is working to make its state capital Chennai drought-proof, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said here Tuesday.

Inaugurating a seminar ‘Chennai 2020′ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Stalin said: “The government is determined in its efforts to make Chennai drought-proof and to ensure 24×7 supply of water.”

He said the government has appointed a consultant to identify a suitable source within the state to augment the drinking water supply by 15 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) to meet the expected demand over the next 15-20 years.

According to him, the demand-supply gap in drinking water is increasing.

Listing the major initiatives taken by the Tamil Nadu government to make Chennai a global city — metro rail, construction of bridges, building of parks, Stalin said the metro rail project covering a distance of 45 km will be completed by 2015.

He said the government is also taking all efforts to establish a financial city, a sports city and a media city.
