Cattle fair near Agra to woo tourists
October 5th, 2011 - 10:17 pm ICT by IANSAgra, Oct 6 (IANS) The annual cattle fair at Bateshwar, the biggest in Uttar Pradesh and often compared to Rajasthan’s Pushkar Fair, will now be a tourist event.
UP Tourism will soon launch a web site to promote adventure tourism in the ravines between the Yamuna and Chambal, a haven for wildlife.
Located around 70 km from Agra, Bateshwar is renowned for its 101 Shiva temples in a row along the Yamuna bank.
“There was a time when the dacoits of Chambal used to offer brass bells at the temples,” said Subhash Jha, a development functionary in the area.
Agra’s Divisional Commissioner Amrit Abhijat said that evening ‘aarti’ similar to those in Varanasi and Haridwar was begun two months ago at the Bateshwar ghat to attract tourists.
Bateshwar is a major centre of religion, both for Hindus and Jains.
