Canada rocked by an earthquake of 6.8 intensity
November 17th, 2009 - 11:00 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattSandspit, Nov 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Canada was rocked by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale on Tuesday morning. It happened at 15:30 UTC and at 7:30 am at the epicenter of the strong earthquake.
The depth of the earthquake was 99 km. This is expected to cause some damage but right now details are not available about the extent of the structural damage to life and property. No estimates of the causalities are right now available.
The earthquake happened about 658 kms from Vancouver, British Columbia.
The ‘West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre’ has issued an advisory that since the strong earthquake occurred on land, a tsunami IS NOT expected at all along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas. This was done to placate the tsunami fears in the coastal region inhabitants.
