Ottawa, Sept 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Canada is bracing for the strike of Hurricane Maria on Friday. The country’s weather forecasters issued an alert on Friday. In the warning which was contained in a statement issued by the country’s weather agency, Environment Canada, forecasters warned that the strength of the storm could break large tree branches and even topple some trees. They expect some communities to face blackouts because of the destruction that the storm would cause.

On Friday, forecasters in Canada told residents on the coast that, “Our latest track shows Maria passing over the isthmus of the Avalon Peninsula this afternoon with hurricane force gusts forecast over land… These wind gusts can topple trees and break large branches, resulting in downed utility lines and power interruptions.”

On Friday, the US National Hurricane Center announced that Maria was traveling with sustained speed of 80 miles per hour. Officials in Canada expect the storm to hit on Friday afternoon but the full impact is expected to be felt on Saturday.

The Canadian Hurricane Center warned that, “Coastal Labrador in particular will likely receive the strongest winds on Saturday.”

Officials say after Maria has passed, they expect storm surge and heavy rains which may lead to flooding of the country’s coastal region.
