Mathura, March 19 (IANS) On the eve of Holi, a new cattle shelter for the strays was opened near here in Govardhan, the hillock which mythology says Lord Krishna lifted on his little finger to save the people and animals from the wrath of Lord Indra.

The sprawling cattle shelter, with a capacity of over 200 animals, was opened Friday at Jatipura village.

“Priests, social activists and animal lovers are all supporting the movement to save the cows and help is pouring in,” Shravan Kumar of the Braj Mandal Heritage Conservation Society told IANS.

The event was attended by former Indian Administrative Service officer Kamal Tawri and Chhattisgarh MP Pradeep Gandhi.

“Right now, we have four sheds and a small hospital. In the course of time, the facilities would be expanded,” said an official.

The Braj Mandal area, spread over 200 km with Lord Krishna shrines dotting the landscape, has lakhs of cattle.

“But as fodder prices have increased, many farmers are finding it hard to keep the animals. The cows are either sold for slaughtering or set loose and left to fend for themselves. Sri Krishna was fond of cows and his whole life centred around milk, butter and dahi, but at present, the condition of cows in the Braj area is not something to feel happy about,” said Shravan Kumar.
