LINCOLN, NEBRASKA (BNO NEWS) – A bipartisan group of U.S. governors sent a letter to Congress to stop a plan that will give the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to regulate greenhouse gases, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman announced on Thursday.

Gov. Heineman joined fellow Governors of Mississippi, West Virginia, Alaska, Georgia, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Nevada, South Dakota, North Dakota, South Carolina, Minnesota, Utah, Hawaii, Louisiana, Alabama, Guam, Puerto Rico, Arizona and Virginia in the petition.

In the letter addressed to Congress, they expressed their concerns over an administrative agency implementing regulations that would have a broad, negative impact on industry and jobs without input from elected officials.

The letter stated that EPA is not equipped to consider the very real potential of economic harm when regulating emissions. Governors also claimed that a heavy-handed registration will increase electricity, gasoline and manufactured products costs.

“We believe that EPA should offer input regarding complex energy and environmental policy initiatives, like reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but feel that these policies are best developed by elected representatives at the state and national level, not by a single federal agency,” the letter states.
