Sep 20, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Late on Sunday, Bermuda suffered the first burnt of Hurricane Igor that lashed it with heavy storm, wind and rains. Although the forecasters had predicted the arrival of Hurricane Igor from beforehand, the intensity with which it pounded over the coastal area was more than what was being expected. Storm surges flooded the coastlines of Bermuda and Palm trees along with the power lines were flattened as the category one hurricane packed with 120 kilometers per our wind speed lashed over the Atlantic island chain. The Bermuda Weather Service mentioned in its website, “Hurricane Igor will be a direct hit tonight”.
Although earlier last week Hurricane Igor was gaining strength rapidly and meteorologists predicted that it might become a powerful category 5 storm, later on during the week it was downgraded to category one storm. However, hurricane Igor still lashed the Bermuda Coastline with a maximum sustained speed of 120 kilometers per hour and was expected to bring around nine inches of rainfall. However, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami held the island was struck by a gust of wind nearing speed of 93 miles per hour.
As per reports, Hurricane Igor is the biggest storm that the region has faced till date and the reactions of the people made it all the more prominent on Sunday. Police received several phone calls from residents after the power lines snapped and tress blocked roadways. However, the department maintained that it had not received any injury reports as of yet. The storms threatened many coastal resorts along with other structures. Several stores closed their shutters early while people tried to keep to their homes as the intensity of the storm increased.
