Auto-rickshaw rally passes Mumbai, raising water awareness
January 6th, 2011 - 9:09 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Jan 6 (IANS) Nearly 200 participants, riding auto-rickshaws, passed by the city Thursday as part of the ‘Tuk-Tuk Marathon’, where 65 teams will cover 2,500 km from the north to the south of India to spread awareness about the water scarcity facing the country.
Organised by UK-based group The Adventurists, the rally is an initiative by the not-for-profit social enterprise Frank Water.
The marathon was flagged off this New Year’s eve from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and will terminate in Cochin in Kerala within a period of two weeks.
“Our objectives were threefold. Firstly, to visit and experience real India. Secondly, to raise a significant amount of money to develop water sanitation, and thirdly, to help SABMiller India spread the responsible drinking message throughout the nation,” said Ewan Davenport, an employee of brewer SABMiller.
The company has raised 2,000 pounds for the project, which aims to build clean water projects in rural villages in India.
