Feb 2, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Australia is gearing up to brave one of the fiercest cyclones to hit the continent in recent times. It has been triggered by high ocean temperature and the La Nina weather pattern. Classified as a category 5 storm Cyclone Yasi is about to hit Australia in a day. It is going to lash the northeastern coast of Australia with a peak speed of 300 km/h. Several thousands of people living in northern Queensland have moved to other areas after being warned of the strength of the storm. Almost 10000 people have been shifted to 20 evacuation centers. A lot of people have also been evacuated to underground car parks.
Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard said, “This is a cyclone of savagery and intensity, people are facing really dreadful hours in front of them”. The cyclone will also bring almost 700mm if rainfall as the met department has warned. Precautions have been issued top the residents as to how they can keep themselves safe when the cyclone ravages the areas. It is quite natural that mobile services and power service will face disruption after the cyclone hits. The coastal areas in the cyclone’s target zone are likely to be flooded and heavy rain will continue for some time after the cyclone weakens.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said that if Yasi maintains its current speed when it hits the coastline it will be the most powerful cyclone to hit Queensland in last one century. Australia is no stranger to tropical storms and cyclones but the size and intensity of Yasi is almost unprecedented thin the experts.
