WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded $106 million in funding, part of an $100 billion investment of the Recovery Act, for 37 innovative research projects that could potentially change the uses and production of energy in the United States, Vice President Joe Biden announced on Thursday.

The funds came through the DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The 37 projects will accelerate innovation in clean energy technologies, increase the nation’s competitiveness and create jobs. The projects are spread among 17 states.

“Thanks to the Recovery Act, dozens of cutting-edge research projects with the potential to dramatically transform how we use energy in this country will now be able to get underway,” said Vice President Biden.

The ARPA-E projects focus on three main areas which are producing advanced biofuels more efficiently from renewable electricity instead of sunlight; designing new batteries to make electric vehicles more affordable; and removing carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants.

Small businesses, educational institutions, national labs and large corporations will work together to pioneer a secure and prosperous energy future for the U.S. Some of the brightest scientists and innovator will be working together in order to accomplish the established goals.
