New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS) In a bid to spread awareness about climate change and lay stress on a “binding deal” at the ongoing summit at Copenhagen, a group of NGOs here released 2,000 eco-friendly sky lanterns Thursday evening, lighting up the skies over the national capital.
Calling it the Festival of Hope, the event was organised at the Lotus temple in south Delhi.

Talking about the initiative, Syed Mehaboob of the Climate Satyagraha camp said: “The aim of the festival is to appeal to all global leaders to arrive at a comprehensive and legally binding treaty at the Copenhagen summit which would ensure a safe and sound future for our successive generations.”

On the initiative of inviting religious leaders to the festival, like Archbishop Vincent Michael Concessao and Swami Agnivesh, Mehaboob said: “Each religious leader has his own sphere of influence. Therefore, if they are convinced, they can in turn influence a large section of people from all walks of life”.

The sky lanterns were made of butter paper and thus eco-friendly, he added.
