Lucknow, Oct 12 (IANS) A huge haul of deer antlers, weighing around 20 quintals, was seized from a warehouse of a biscuit-manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district Tuesday, officials said.

The antlers were seized during a joint raid conducted by forest officials and the police at the warehouse in the Kutebsher town, some 450 kms from Lucknow.

“The antlers are of spotted and sambar deer,” Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Girsih H.V. told IANS on phone from Saharanpur.

“With the amount of the antlers seized from the warehouse, it appears to be a big wildlife trade racket. We have initiated a probe,” he added.

According to officials, it appears that the owner was using the warehouse to house antlers of various species of deer on the pretext of storing biscuits.

“Teams have been constituted to nab the owner, who managed to escape at the time of the raid,” Senior Superintendent of Police Amit Chandra told reporters in Saharanpur.
