10 dead, 30,000 evacuated after torrential rains in Beijing (Lead)
July 22nd, 2012 - 2:10 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, July 22 (IANS) At least 10 people were killed while more than 30,000 were evacuated in the heaviest rains in six decades in the Chinese capital, authorities said Sunday.
Thousands of residents of the city’s Fangshan, Huairou, Mentougou, Pinggu, Miyun and Yanqing areas were relocated Sunday morning, Xinhua reported.
One person was killed after being struck by lightning, while the head of a police station died of electric shock after a live electric wire fell into the water.
The city received an average rainfall of 170 mm, and Fangshan area recorded the maximum precipitation with 460 mm, according to the Beijing Meteorological Bureau.
Mobile phone services and internet access were disrupted in six other areas.
Train services between Beijing and Guangzhou were suspended as rail tracks were submerged in water.
More than 12,000 people were deployed for draining out water from streets.
In other regions of the country, torrential rains since Friday night have killed at least 13 people.
In the northern province of Shanxi, four people were killed after the pick-up truck they were travelling in was carried away by floodwaters to the middle of a river in Shuozhou city.
In southwestern Sichuan province, six people were killed in rain-triggered landslides.
At least 475 flights were cancelled and 80 delayed by over one hour till 11 p.m. Saturday, the Beijing Capital International Airport said.
