Wyclef Jean to become university lecturer
October 6th, 2010 - 4:02 am ICT by IANSLondon, Oct 6 (IANS) Rapper Wyclef Jean is swapping Haitian politics for an academic career in the US. The hip-hop star is set to become a regular lecturer at Brown University.
The singer, who was recently denied permission to stand in Haiti’s presidential race, has been awarded a fellowship at the prestigious educational institution in Rhode Island, reports celebrifi.com.
Jean will join the university’s Department of Africana Studies as a visiting fellow, and lecture and teach at the school throughout the 2010-2011 academic year.
The Grammy-winner will also participate in Brown’s Haiti Initiative, which focuses on the restoration of the troubled country’s health, education and cultural systems.
“I look forward to my time at Brown as a period of learning and reflection. I hope to make a genuine contribution to the rich intellectual community at the University and to its Haitian Initiative in particular,” he said.
“I am a lifelong student and appreciate this unique opportunity to contemplate all the potential and possibilities, as well as the contributions of my homeland, and Haitians in the diaspora, to the world’s creative culture,” he added.
