Port-Au-Prince, Aug 21, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Haitian-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean’s dream to run for the presidency of the earthquake-ravaged nation has come to a grinding halt after elections officials rejected the musical artist’s candidacy. The 40-year-old singer has formally registered to run for the post of the Haitian President earlier this month in the elections that are scheduled to take place in the country later in the month of November. However, his desire to become the president of his native land is going to remain unfulfilled after his candidacy was disqualified on Friday by the election officials of Haiti.
Following the ruling, Wyclef Jean released a statement saying that the decision of the election committee had indeed left him immensely disappointed while also pointing out that he does not agree with the decision taken by the Haitian officials. However, the hip-hop star urged his followers to behave ‘peacefully and responsibly’ and accept the decision that has been reached by the election committee. Wyclef Jean was among the 15 candidates who have been debarred by the officials from running from the November 28 elections while as many as 19 candidates have been given the green signal.
Although Wyclef Jean’s candidacy has been dismissed by the election committee, the precise reason which propelled them to take the decision still remains unclear. However, the musical artist’s bid to run for Haiti presidency has been challenged as he fails to fulfill the criteria of living in the country to run for the post. Wyclef Jean who was born in Haiti left the country at the age of 9 when his family emigrated to the United States.
