Washington, July 27 (ANI): Singer Wyclef Jean is taking a drift from his musical career and is considering running for president of his native Haiti.

The crooner, 37, has said that talk of an official campaign is still premature, but the country’s locals had “drafted” him into politics.

“I can’t sing forever,” Us Magazine quoted Jean as telling CNN.

Jean has already filled out the necessary paperwork in case he decided to move forward with a campaign, according to Canadian newspaper Le Droit.

A statement released by his foundation, Yele Haiti, read: “Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward. At this time, Wyclef Jean has not announced his intent to run for Haitian president. If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.”

Jean has always been an outspoken advocate for the Caribbean country in which he was born, and was one of the first celebs to travel to Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January.

Haiti’s current president, Rene Preval, has reached his term limits and cannot run a third time.

Elections will be held Nov. 28. (ANI)
