Wyclef Jean aware of assassination risk
August 9th, 2010 - 4:41 pm ICT by ANILondon, Aug 09 (ANI): Rapper Wyclef Jean has admitted that he is aware of the risk of assassination during his campaign to become the Haitian president.
The former Fugees star recently announced his launch for office and is preparing to begin travelling into the slums and camps of Haiti to win votes.
Jean admitted that he worries for his safety because the poverty-stricken country has a history of political violence and he will be protected at all times by a dozen bodyguards.
But he said he wouldn’t stop campaigning because of the danger.
“You have two choices - either sit back thinking of the danger or do something to move your country forward,” The Daily Express quoted Jean as saying.
“Assassination is always a possibility but I’d rather die trying to achieve something than die doing nothing. I’m telling you right now, brother, I’m going to fight for the rights of the Haitian people so they can get their justice.
“At times, to be honest, I think, ‘What am I doing?’ But I can hear the voice of youth drafting me. When I’m on the ground, they say to me, ‘Clef, you’re our last hope.’ They feel close to me because I speak their language,” he added.
Jean was born in Haiti but moved to the U.S. when he was nine. (ANI)
