WWE Smackdown: Christian vs Del Rio

Mar 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) As WWE Friday Night Smackdown began last night, Rey Mysterio greeted his fans on his way to the ring. It was time for his match against CM Punk. They went right into the match, which is rare for the WWE, usually there is a bit of drama and additions to the story lines before we ever get to see a match. Refreshing start to the show.

The two men take turns ruling the ring, but the match ended when Cody Rhodes interrupted and began to attack Rey. Cody continued to hit Rey in the face, trying to disfigure him. He head butted Rey’s face with his face mask, and again with his knee brace. You may remember “Dashing Cody Rhodes” has worn the mask ever since Rey broke Cody’s nose. Cody is apparently still trying to get revenge.

Edge soon made his way to the ring to face Drew McIntyre as the camera cut to a National Guard troop in the audience. God bless the troops! Edge and Drew immediately locked up in a well-matched battle. Drew went right after the injured arm of Edger, trying to knock out the World Heavyweight Champion just days before Wrestlemania. It did not take long for Edge to force Drew to tap out, however, and the Rated R Superstar barely had to even use his right arm. After he had already won the match, Edge sent a message to those who will oppose him, by Spearing the already defeated Drew.

And then it was time for the storyline. Everyone from JR to the Big Show spoke of the Undertaker’s career as scenes from the Dead Man’s matches played in the background. Then they switched to Triple H, and then back to Taker. The Undertaker and Triple H will face off in nine days at Wrestlemania.

Rosa Mindex and Kelly Kelly came out next to face LayCool, the team of Layla and Michelle McCool. LayCool quickly won the match, to make time for more storyline drama, as Layla and Michelle poked fun at their Wrestlemania opponents- Snooki, Trish Stratus, and John Morrison.

In a match for the Intercontinental Championship, Corre member Wade Barrett faced off with Kofi Kingston. Wade dominated the match from the beginning as the other Corre members watched on. Barrett soon kicked Kofi out of the ring, after his head banged off the ring apron.

Kofi soon came up from his knees to wail on Barrett, only to be slammed back to the ring floor by the former Nexus member. But Kingston was up again! And the balance of power in this match kept swaying from side to side. Wade Barrett finally won the match, with no help from the other Corre members, which is indeed rare. True to form, the Corre had Justin Gabriel perform his finishing move on Kofi for no apparent reason other than to instill fear.

Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long reinforced his rule to Alberto Del Rio that if he and Edge touch each other before Wrestlemania, they will be disqualified from competing in the event. As Del Rio uttered, “You wouldn’t dare,” Long informed him that there had been twenty six Wrestlemania’s without him, “Don’t think for one minute I will hesitate to make it twenty seven.” Lon added. The Long advised Del Rio to go and focus on his upcoming match with Christian.

The Undertaker made his way to the ring as the audience went wild. His newer tune ‘Ain’t No Grave’ (Gonna Hold My Body Down) played as he slowly walked up the ramp in his long black leather trenchcoat, Amish funeral hat, and boots. He took the mic in the dark, and in the glow of blacklights throughout the arena he warned Triple H once again what he plans to do to him at Wrestlemania.

Jack Swagger soon made R Truth tap out with an ankle lock. Michael Cole came out of his cowardly hiding in the “Cole Mine” plexiglass box to taunt R Truth …after he was already down, of course. Then Alberto Del Rio drove out to the ring in a Mercedes, with Brotus at his side. His match with Christian was up next.

Edge had no choice but to watch on as Del Rio’s every move was measured and purposeful;l. For a while Del Rio had the upper hand over Christian, but as is often the case, control of the match switched hands many times. Just the presence of Edge at ringside distracted Del Rio a great deal, however, keeping his focus from being clear. Christian managed to flip Del Rio off the top rope, but as he held his opponent down, Del Rio’s ring announcer placed his foot on the bottom rope, which meant that Christian had to let him go.

Del Rio once again gained control of the match, but as Edge began to hit Brotus with the steel chair, Del Rio was distracted by the attack, and lost the match to Christian. Edge held the steel chair up, just about to hit Del Rio with it, when Christian snatched the chair, and reminded Edge that if he touches Del Rio, he will not get to be in Wrestlemania. Christian then smacked Del Rio in the back with the steel chair.
