Amitabh Bachchan New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) Singing legend Asha Bhosle, who has sung over 12,000 songs in 18 languages, turned 77 Wednesday. And she was showered with greeting and blessings from many including megastar Amitabh Bachchan and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar.
The singer, who started singing at a very young age, is known for her versatility. After crooning a series of hits for the Hindi film industry’s dancing queen Helen, she was tagged as a cabaret singer.

Friends and fans of the Padma Vibhushan awardee took to micro blogging site Twitter to convey their birthday wishes.

“Asha ji, janm divas ki dher sari shubhkamanayein… Aap swasth rahen aur sukhi sampann rahen yahi ishwar se prarthana hai. (My best wishes on your birthday. May god keep you in good health and shower you with wealth and happiness),” Bachchan posted on Twitter.

Asha’s elder sister Lata Mangeshkar also showered blessings and love.

“Aaj meri choti behen Asha ka janamdin hai, uske janamdin ke awasar pe main usey anek aashirwad deti hu (Today is my younger sister’s birthday and I wish her all the luck and happiness for years ahead),” Lata Mangeshkar posted on her Twitter page.

And Asha, who is in Singapore for a concert, thanked her fans and well-wishers for their messages.

“Friends, brothers and sisters, once again thank you for your well wishes and b’day greetings. Talk to you soon from Singapore,” Asha posted on her Twitter page.

Asha’s real talent was noticed by composer R.D. Burman, who was instrumental in bringing her out of her elder sister and singing legend Lata Mangeshkar’s shadow. Asha and Burman later married.

Songs like “Dum maro dum” (”Hare Rama, Hare Krishna”), “Mehbooba mehbooba” (”Sholay”), “Mera kuch saaman” (”Ijaazat”), “Piya tu ab to aaja” (”Caravan”) and “Chura liya hai tum ne” (”Yaadon Ki Baraat”) bear testimony to the amazing creativity of the Asha-Burman combination.

  1. DARIUS Says:

To say that Ashaji’s “real talent was noticed by RD Burman” is absolute nonsense. The diva non pariel had a twenty five year old career studded with mega success and monumental world wide fame behind her before RD and Dum Maro Dum materialized. It was maestro OP Nayyar who was instrumental in shaping the Asha legend in no uncertain terms. From Cham Chama Cham Cham to Pran Jaye Par Vacchan Na Jaye, it was OP who presented Ashaji as a formidable singing force, with a vocal identity distinct from Lataji’s and brought to fore a versatility and singing range which remains unmatched to this day.Where does RD fit in this picture? Besides as early as 1960, the legendary Mohammad Rafi when asked to name his favourite female singers in a cover story for Filmfare, placed Ashaji second only to the fabled Noor Jehan and relegated Lataji to the third slot.Rafi Saab’s comment on Asha Bhosle in the same issue made history- “I am a humble admirer of the great Asha Bhosle. My head bows before her talent and versatility”.Also the dust jacket for the 1959 Navrang LP hailed Ashaji as “the most sought after playback singer of the day”.The 1956-1960 period was not only the most innovative, path breaking and revolutionary one in the annals of songdom but also marked a meteoric high in Ashaji’s career similar to that of Lataji in the 1949-1955 years. It would not be incorrect to state over here that it was Ashaji who was responsible for RD’s first breakthrough success Teesri Manzil in 1966.The singer’s career was at
it’s pinnacle by then whereas RD was a mere struggler, waiting for lady luck to shine on him, so frankly who made whom needs no further debate or validation for that matter. In future please think twice before coming up with such factually incorrect statements.
