Will Mad Men End in 2012?

LAS VEGAS (THAINDIAN NEWS) — The world is not the only thing that may end in 2012, according to producer Matthew Weiner, who says the dramatic television series ‘Mad Men’ may see its final episode that year.
‘Mad Men’ premiered in July 2007 on U.S. cable network AMC and is produced by Lionsgate Television. Its last episode aired on November 8, 2009, the end of season 3. Season four, which is currently still in production, is expected to premiere this July.
While season six seems to be a long time away, series creator Matthew Weiner believes that season six will be the last season of the series. He made the statements during the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas this past weekend.
The series chronicles the life of marketing executives in the 60’s and has won numerous awards. Earlier this year, the series won an Oscar award for best drama series and was nominated in two other categories - Jon Hamm (who portrays advertising executive Don Draper) for best actor and January Jones (who portrays a young housewife and mother, Betty Draper) for best actress in a television series drama.
Weiner - as he was discussing the twists and turns he creates each season - said he could not imagine writing or even continuing the series past a sixth season. Mad Men has seen the main characters go through major changes throughout the first three seasons and Weiner expects to continue this trend should the series be renewed for a fifth and sixth season.
The comments by Weiner came unexpectedly, and drew angry responses from hardcore ‘Mad Men’ fans who want to see the series continue as long as possible. The production company is currently shooting the fourth season which will premiere on AMC in July.
Spokespeople for AMC or Lionsgate Television did not comment on Weiner’s remarks this weekend.
