Was Paul an ‘alcoholic’ and ‘womaniser’?April 22nd, 2009 - 3:47 pm ICT by Sampurn Wire
Paul Newman was one of the most handsome and talented Hollywood actors to enthrall audiences from the 1950s onwards.
Most importantly he also maintained the reputation of being Hollywood’s most faithful husband with his famous quote, “Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?”
He seemed totally devoted to his wife of many years Joanne Woodward and children. He even set up a foundation for drug abuse prevention in memory of his son Scott Newman who died from a an accidental drug overdose in 1978.
But now a new biography of the late Hollywood legend that passed away on September 26 last year negates a lot of that reputation and says that he was a womaniser and an alcoholic.
According to the Dailymail online, the new book “Paul Newman: A Life, written’ by Shawn Levy, portrays the handsome blue eyed actor as a functioning alcoholic and also reportedly describes how Newman, wearing a bottle opener on a chain around his neck, put away “beer after beer after beer, a case or more a day,” followed by Scotch. Newman is said to have had an affair with a journalist who was writing an article on his movie “Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid’.
The biography is due to be published in May in the US and is expected to make a few waves.
