Wanted: Dark-skinned gypsy to play Heathcliff

London, April 4 (ANI): Makers of the new big-screen version of ‘Wuthering Heights’ are so determined to achieve authenticity that they’re seeking to cast an actor who resembles Emily Bronte’s original portrayal of Heathcliff, the brooding male lead.

Bronte described Heathcliff as being ‘dark-skinned gypsy in aspect’ and ‘a little lascar’ - a 19th-century reference to sailors from India.

Until now, Heathcliff has largely been played by a series of quintessentially British actors, including Laurence Olivier and Ralph Fiennes.

However, Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold wants to cast an unknown who may have foreign roots.

They filmmakers have even held discussion with members of Yorkshire’s Romany community.

“We’re certainly after somebody who best fits that Bronte description in the book,” Times Online quoted Gail Stevens, the film’s casting director, as saying.

The movie is due to start shooting this summer. (ANI)
