Vic Mizzy: Addams Family Composer Dies, Reason Unknown

vicOct. 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Vic Mizzy, the composer known mostly for the song he had composed for the movie “The Addams Family”, died on Saturday at his Bel Air home. He was 93 years old at the time of death. The cause of the death was unknown, according to his manager Jonathan Wilson.

Mizzy was born in Brooklyn. He was a talented singer as well as a songwriter. He is mostly remembered as the composer of the catchy tracks of the popular 1960 sitcoms “The Green Acre” and “The Addams Family.” He also composed tracks like “My Songs Are Getting Better All The Time”. Other than the Addams Family score, that catapulted him to sky-scraping popularity, he is also widely remembered for the extremely unconventional score he did with the song “With a Hey and a Ho”.

For the song in “The Addams Family”, he tried to give it a quirky feel. That is why the lyrics that are so very strange. Also, to make it sound as if a number of vocalists were singing it instead of one, he recorded and re-recorded it a number of times. All the recordings were then edited together. It is this that gives the song the sound of a chorus.

Born in Brooklyn, Mizzy started his musical career by writing songs for shows along with Irving Taylor. His television career started in 1960 with the series “Moment of Fear” for which he composed the music. When he got famous, he was smart enough to copyright a song. That way, he could ensure that every time the song was played in any match , he got paid for it.
