USC brings Hollywood storytellers to India
November 17th, 2011 - 7:11 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) A group of top Hollywood writers and producers are in the city to participate in a workshop on storytelling and how to use it to power social change.
The writers of several TV shows and films have been brought here by the University of Southern California (USC) to participate in the 5th International Entertainment Education Conference, which opened today.
They will teach participants at the conference how to use storytelling for social progress, and will reinforce their message by screening an documentary film on climate change.
Among those who have arrived are Christopher Keyser, president of the Writers Guild of America, West; Zoanne Clack (”Grey’s Anatomy”); Michael Nash (”Climate Refugees”); and Walt Disney Feature Animation executive Karen Tenkhoff.
The event has been organised by the Hollywood Health & Society (HH&S;), a programme of the Norman Lear Center at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, Los Angeles.
“We are thrilled to bring some of Hollywood’s master storytellers to India to share their insights with entertainment education experts from around the world,” said HH&S; Director Sandra de Castro Buffington, who’s leading the trip.
“Their stories can be a powerful force for social change on a global scale.”
The workshop, scheduled for Nov. 19 at the Habitat Centre, will have a plenary panel that will showcase clips of the health storylines of top Bollywood and Hollywood TV and film writers and producers.
The panel will include Keyser, Clack, Nash, Tenkhoff and Vinta Nanda (”Tara, Raahat”).
It will writing TV dramas about health concerns; the entertainment industry’s approach to programming about health issues in India and the US; techniques for writing dramas with social impact; and TV and films as vehicles for social change.
USC’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism is one of top journalism school’s in the US and has an enrollment of more than 2,200 students.
