New Delhi, May 6 (ANI): United Progressive Alliance-Left Committee on India US Civil Nuclear cooperation on Tuesday held in-depth discussions on the India specific Safeguards Agreement between India and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

While talking to the media after the 8th meeting of the Joint Committee, the Senior Congress Leader Pranab Mukherjee said, the Left parties have sought further clarifications on it, which will be provided in the next few days.

He said further discussions will be held in the next meeting of the Committee to be held on May 28.

All members of the Committee, except Prithviraj Chavan, who is out of station, attended the meeting.

The Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas said, the government wanted the Committee to give a go-ahead for the approval of safeguards agreement at the IAEA’s Board of Governors meet.

He added that the Left has sought some clarifications on the issue. He said the Left parties will meet on May 23 to decide their strategy ahead of the committee’s next meeting.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Special Envoy on Indo-US Nuclear Deal, Shyam Saran said, uncertainty over the agreement can increase if the government in Washington changes.

Interacting with members of the Women’s Press Corps in New Delhi today, he said, the Left parties had raised valid questions on the nature of obligations of India and the obligations of the US under the agreement.

Saran said the government is trying to address the allies’ reservations. He said the Government has kept Parliament and the people fully informed on the negotiation. (ANI)
