surajOct 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A New Delhi teen has been chosen to play the lead in the film based on the Booker prize winning novel ‘Life of Pi’. The unknown actor was chosen among the 3000 candidates after a 17 month search. Director Ang Lee selected the teenager named Suraj Sharma after he felt that he was apt to play the role of Pi. He said that Suraj Sharma filled the room with emotions during the audition and also had very expressive eyes. He also added that his natural ability to stay in the world of the story that he also believes in was a rare treasure.

Though many have shown shock at the choice of an actor who has no prior experience in acting, many feel that it could just turn out to another ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ story for the teenager. The shooting for the film is set to begin in January and the script has been written by David Magee. Ang Lee whose previous credits include ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’ and ‘Hulk’ said that he was not sure how exactly he was going to direct the story of a little boy at sea with a tiger. He said that it was a hard story to work on.

‘The Life of Pi’ was written by Yann Martel and it won the Booker prize in 2002. The story revolved around a boy named Pi Patel who spent 227 days at sea with four animals. The Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker is also expected to be an essential part of the script and there is also a hyena, an orangutan and a zebra. Some reports indicate that the film could be released in 3D and the film will be shot in India and Taiwan.
