Twitter to Preach religion to youth
July 24th, 2009 - 10:14 am ICT by Sampurn WireHindus have asked their flock to use micro-blogging services like Twitter to make the message more attractive and accessible, especially for youth.
Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that in order to put religion and spirituality on the priority lists of youth, these interactive mediums could prove very effective tools in this age of complexities and distractions.
Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said that religious leaders and others could share religious tips, holy and special days, spiritual practices, prayers, relevant sites, questions, spirituality resources, religious observations, related news, quotes, etc., through these mediums.
In addition to Twitter, Rajan Zed also suggested Jaiku, identi.ca, Plurk, Dil Khol Ke Bol, FriendFeed, Tumblr, Sweeter, Microblogr, etc. There are reportedly more than one hundred micro-blogging services in the world.
Culture of youth was different today and we should plan, tailor and prioritize our initiatives, programs and projects accordingly. Parents should also take spirituality and religion seriously and help the religious organizations in better engaging the youth in spirituality. Conventional style of dealing with spirituality and religion did not appear to be effectively working with today’s youth. Make it more exciting and challenging, Rajan Zed pointed out.
Micro-blogging allows users to send brief updates and publish these by various means. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksha (liberation) is its ultimate goal.
